Prehistoric creatures have again invaded Crater Lake National Park
…and this time there’s more than one.

DINOSAUR LAKE II Dinosaurs Arising
by Kathryn Meyer Griffith
Henry Shore has been Chief Park Ranger at Crater Lake National Park for thirteen years now and thought the days when he’d had to fight a rogue dinosaur that lived in the caves below the lake were long over.
Until one of his park rangers, to save a visitor’s life, is in a deadly struggle out in the woods with a new breed of dinosaur worse than the last one. It’s as big as a man, but this one is a young one. And growing.
Then more of the creatures begin to show up everywhere, threatening people and destroying the tranquility and safety of his beloved park.
A tourist trolley filled with fifteen people is snatched up off the crater’s rim by another version of the younger one…but this one has grown into a giant with fangs, claws and a deadly tail.
And this one has wings.
Ugly Gargoyles, Henry calls them.
For this one isn’t alone.
They’re flying beyond the park’s boundaries into the neighboring towns.
So Henry, with the help of his son-in-law, a paleontologist named Justin, and a band of brave park rangers, and a few good soldiers, must not only protect his park and his people from monsters once more but find their lair and destroy it and them before the creatures kill again. ***

It’s hard to say which part and or book I liked the best. In a way you could compare this to "Jurassic Park" but without the scientist doing his genetic maneuverings. The dinosaurs here are of the flying variety and they are different sizes and ages. For whatever reason they have been able to hide for the last five years with no one discovering them. Yes, they are still trying to take over the national park but again these dinosaurs are different. This time around they are seen and attack outside the park. The main characters are the same and like "Dinosaur Lake", you just have to keep reading to see who survives and what the dinosaurs are up to. I loved it!!!!

Please note there are spoilers ahead

I was really looking forward to this after having just finished the first book. In the first, I really connected with the characters, enough that I was bummed when even minor characters were killed. I was looking forward to reading these characters again, but this second book fell flat. Ann was put in peril in the first, which was a springboard for the protagonist's character development in dealing with the loss of someone close to him. I figured in this one, either Ann would foolishly wander into the dinosaurs again (because there's always someone doing that) or she would sit back and it would be someone else's turn, such as Laura or Phoebe (since the theme of traditional gender roles and women being rescued has been so strong throughout). Unfortunately, the author chose to go the route of giving Ann cancer, which was a thinly veiled attempt to again put her in peril without it being at the claws of dinosaurs. It was, unfortunately, obvious from the first mention of her being unusually tired lately.

I did like the character of Stanton until a point, which is also one of the biggest problems I have with this book. While the first book referred to George's Native American ("Indian" in the book) heritage frequently, it was this second book that took it from an easily ignored tokenism all the way to uncomfortable racial stereotyping. At one point, Stanton was referred to as having "Indian eyes" and being able to see well in the dark. There were constant references to her Native ("Indian" again) heritage. Almost every interaction with her involved her heritage in increasingly cliched stereotypes. Even when she wasn't in a scene, others would talk about her using those same stereotypes. Any character slightly Native became part of her mysterious, mystical tribe with magic Indian powers or whatever. I haven't seen this type of stereotyping for Natives outside of PSAs and old cartoons.

Characterization-wise, it was jarring and out of nowhere. At first, there was no mention of Stanton's heritage, beyond her eye color. She did a whole lot and kicked butt and it was just enough. Next thing I know, she gets premonitions and is talking to George's ghost after praying to tribal deities. Stanton turned into a mystical plot device and I found myself missing the rest of her character traits. I guess the character being a veteran, mother, widow to a fellow soldier, survivalist, and hero wasn't enough for the author.

There's a way to bring interesting local folklore into a book, but this was not the way to do it. At best, it was clumsy and embarrassingly racially stereotyped. After the first book, I had planned on reading the third as well as the second. After reading the second book, I'm not going to read the third. I'm not sure I can take any more embarrassing sentences about "Indian eyes."
I love the first book in the series and I like this book. The other book was much more believable where I had to take more of a leap of faith with the second book because the flying dinosaurs were too intelligent. The flying dinosaurs were smart enough to hide from the characters in the story; but, they were huge. Didn’t somebody notice that there was a loss of significant numbers of animal to feed these carnivorous dinosaurs? Still I enjoyed the main characters in the book and I am interested enough in how the writer created the stories to want to buy the third book. Also the women in the story all seem to be very strong mentally and physically.
I still think the author is a genius but having read book 1 the impact of 2 become as bit less. While this one is a great read as well, I think the author would have been better served to leave this one as a one book read. I think it becomes harder to top the original, but she certainly crafter another good and believable story.

I have already bought and I am currently reading that one as well. I think sometimes too much of a good thing takes away from the original story.

I was however intrigued by the flying gargoyle/dinosaur concept of this book. I thought they seemed more like dragon characters, but they were tenacious and deadly I hated that two of the main characters were killed off in the first and not in this one as I think they were a great part of the first and can only believe this one and the third book were an after thought by the author.

In any case I believe it is one you will like, just not, maybe as much as the first.
I bought the Audible version first and went through it in two days. I bought the kindle version because I thought it was so good.

I think one of the other reviewers mentioned that they couldn't understand how the dinosaurs were able to hide all this time. I think they must have missed a section, because it is explained. The book is very believable and very exciting! Also, she has some clever twists in here that I wished they had done in Jurassic Park! I won't spoil it for you, but it involves the biology of the dinosaurs.

Another aspect of her story was that her characters were very likeable people. It felt like I knew them. Which made it even more terrifying when they were in danger! I've bought several of her books, in fact, and I've never been disappointed.
“Dinosaur Lake II Dinosaurs Arising” by Kathryn Meyer Griffith picks up five years after the exciting conclusion of “Dinosaur Lake”, the first episode in this series. If anything, Griffith surpassed the tense and thrilling action found in that first book, and “Dinosaur Lake II” will keep you reading until the final word.

I read a review in which a reader said this book was “just more of the same”, as if that was a bad thing. “More of the same” is exactly why I wanted to read the second – and soon, the third – book in this series. More dinosaurs, more action, more fatalities, more bureaucratic bumbling, and more things that go BOOM! What more could you want?

If you enjoyed the first book in this series, and are ready for another dose of the same, but ramped up a notch, check out “Dinosaur Lake II Dinosaurs Arising” for yourself. I loved it, and I think you will, too. If you haven’t yet read book 1, what are you waiting for?
